Tales of Pirates Full Review

By Erhan Altay
Published by IGG, Tales of Pirates is a simple yet entertaining 2D game. Like Florensia, Tales of Pirates can be played on both land and sea. Though there are only four beginner classes, players can specialize into one of six advanced classes at level 40. In addition to this, starting at level 15, players can purchase a variety of ships and take to the high seas.

Rather than choosing a class or race from the start, Tales of Pirates allows you select one of four characters; a young man named Lance, a big, bulky guy named Carsise, a young woman named Phyllis, or a little girl named Ami. Your choice here will determine what basic and advanced classes you can pursue, but the game makes this clear through a diagram. Being a 2D game, the appearance customization is limited to a handful of hair and face choices per character. After character creation, the next step to take is selecting one of three tree starting cities. The three starting cities are Argent City on the forested Ascaron continent, the desert city of Shaitan, and Icicle Castle, which is located in the frigid icelands. After playing on all these areas, I would recommend Argent City, but Icicle Castle is also enjoyable. Avoid Shaitan City; the environment is bland, and finding your way around the desert is a nuisance.
Back to Basics
When you’ve created your character and chosen your starting location, you’ll be placed in the appropriate city and be able to walk around as you please. Though the game doesn’t require it, I would suggest tracking down the nearby Newbie Helper NPC (usually located near the center of towns) and completing the quests they offer. Unfortunately, these quests are painfully dull. They involve walking back and forth from the helper to the blacksmith, tailor, and doctor with each trip netting you an entire level worth of experience. After the nonsense quests, you’ll receive your first kill quest, and most quests from then on will involve hunting. Players start with equipment in Tales of Pirates, but strangely it’s unequipped, so be sure to open your inventory and equip yourself before hunting. Players also start with a box which can be opened at certain levels. Each time it’s opened, it provides new equipment for the appropriate level. The equipment box, along with relatively fast leveling, help make the early stages of Tales of Pirates fast-paced, but the grind kicks in eventually.

Initially, you may wonder what exactly Tales of Pirates has to do with piracy or sailing, but starting at level 15 players are able to purchase and sail ships. Ships come in several varieties, from simple merchant vessels to large war ships like the ‘Great White Shark.’ In addition to fighting monsters or other players on land, Tales of Pirates allows players to fight ship vs. ship. In fact, much more of the game world is covered by water than by land, so be ready to take to the sea if you want to see everything there is to offer. Piracy makes another appearance in the game’s guild wars mechanism. Players can create or join guilds that are aligned to either the Pirate or Navy faction, then choose to go to war with opposing guilds. The sailing theme is further emphasized by references to other swashbuckling franchises, like the popular anime series ‘One Piece’ and Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’
Breeding Made Easy
Besides fighting on land and sea, Tales of Pirates allows players to raise and even breed pets. Pets fight along side their masters and can reach a maximum level of 41. By breeding two level 20+ pets, players can acquire more powerful second generation pets. Pets can be further customized by being fed special fruits, each raising a different stat. Tales of Pirates also has three special dungeon areas called mazes. These zones have open pvp, and are each available for only three hours a day, but provide bonus experience and better loot. I recommend you wait until you’re both a high level and with a group of guild mates before venturing into these dungeons, since there is a good chance you’ll be ganked, otherwise. Tales of Pirates is not the most attractive looking game out there, but for those willing to put in the time, it does contain a great deal of content. As of this writing, the game continues to be heavily supported by the publisher with new content upgrades and events. So, if the theme interests you, be sure to give it a try.

Tales of Pirates boasts quite a few features and content for a 2D game. Open PvP dungeons, guild wars, land and sea combat and pets to name a few. But, despite the level of content, the game’s graphics and style put Tales of Pirates in the hit or miss category. If the simple graphic style and pirate/sailing theme interests you, give it a try. Otherwise, you’ll likely lose interest before long.
